7. “When you grow up in an alcoholic family, there are skills you learn to survive and function when in an unstable environment,” Lennon said. “Unfortunately, many of those ‘skills’ are not productive in the real world later in life. As a child of an alcoholic, you learn to block out unpleasant things that occur. This coping mechanism put a strain on my relationship with my wife, friends and family. Children of alcoholics also tend to create an emotional wall between themselves and the ones they love and care about.”
